What is a mainsail cover for?

A mainsail cover is a protection made of waterproof but breathable fabric, resistant to the sun. The mainsail cover ensures the protection of the mainsail when it is lowered. It protects it from:

•    The sun, which deteriorates the fabric fibers
•    The wind, which makes it flutter and crease, accelerating its wear
•    Water and salt
•    Dirt: sand, dust, bird droppings…

The mainsail cover is therefore installed when not sailing (at the dock, at anchor, during winter storage…) or during motoring phases. This cover significantly extends the lifespan of the mainsail, which is already heavily used on a sailboat.

How to choose the right mainsail cover?

To be effective and protect the entire mainsail, mainsail covers must cover the boom that supports the mainsail and surround the mast at the gooseneck. The mainsail cover thus protects the mainsail fabric as well as all its accessories: headboard, battens, reefing points…

There are different types of mainsail covers. A mainsail cover can be made in one piece with an opening system, most often a zipper, fixed simultaneously around the boom and the mast. There are also two-piece mainsail covers, with one cover dedicated to protecting the boom and another cover that must be attached at the junction of the boom and the mast. Note that this type of cover is less effective and takes longer to install than one-piece covers.

The fabric pieces are then hand-sewn in our workshops in Sarzeau, Brittany, and the cover’s accessories are added: closure system, straps, reinforcements…
