Description
As you may have noticed, SNA has developed 4 models of Genoa sleeves. The ESSENTIAL Genoa cover is our flagship product.
It combines all the qualities: lightness, fabric resistance to abrasion and UV, ease of use with the spinnaker halyard, maximum sail tightening, and at a very attractive price.
The fabric used is optimal: resistant, breathable, waterproof, UV-resistant.
And the design is innovative and effective.
Equipping your sailboat with a Genoa cover is still not very common.
Boat owners hesitate to acquire one for several reasons.
The first is that installing and removing the cover before and after each sail represents an effort that discourages good intentions. Indeed, the covers available on the market are heavy and difficult to hoist, to close, and just as difficult to lower, while taking care that they do not fall into the water.
It is by observing this hardship among their neighbors on the dock that sailors decide not to take the plunge.
To protect your zipper, we recommend tying a bungee cord between the zipper slider body (not through the zipper pull hole, see illustration photo) and the lifeline, for example, which will cushion the tension on the zipper.
Aside on the marine fabric we selected for making our Genoa covers.
This American-made fabric offers multiple advantages.
- Breathable, referring to the fabric’s ability to evacuate water from the inside to the outside, but only if a force is acting, such as sunlight or an artificial heat source that raises the temperature inside the cover compared to outside.
- Durable, with high tear resistance.
- Waterproof/water-resistant. The seams of the cover may leak for a while until dirt fills the needle holes. Sometimes, during heavy rain, leaks can occur due to spray effects. This is due to the absence of a polyurethane coating on the fabric, which makes it more breathable.
- A DWR coating (Durable Water Repellent) is applied on both sides, causing water to bead; however, this fades over time and can be reapplied. This is unrelated to the fabric’s water resistance. Additionally, an antifungal agent is applied to prevent mold growth.
It is easy to maintain as follows:
- Spot clean using a soapy solution made from a mild detergent and warm water.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove soap and let air dry.
- In case of mold stains, prepare a solution of one (1) cup of bleach and half (1/2) cup of mild detergent in 4 liters of water.

The fact that the sail is not perfectly tightened causes flapping, resulting in a constant noise and especially damages the sail, potentially leading to its destruction from friction.
For this reason, in areas with strong winds, such as the Mediterranean, sailors hesitate to equip themselves with a genoa cover that can do more harm than good to the sail.
At SNA, the cover remains perfectly tightened from bottom to top, thanks to our design technique and the mechanical properties of the fastenings used.
Another reason not to equip a genoa cover lies in the type of fabric used to make the foresail cover.
It is very common to observe holes and tears around the fastenings and along the stitching.
At SNA, the fabric used is 7 times more resistant than acrylic fabric. Moreover, it achieves the feat of being both waterproof and breathable, and finally, it is extremely lightweight.
For all these reasons, sailors prefer to opt for a sail on which the sailboat has a band of fabric sewn, generally called “sunbrella furling,” adhesive or not, which is sewn along the two rearmost edges of the sail (the leech and the foot).
It is common to have the foot repaired and to replace the UV protection band every 3 years.
It is at this point that owners start to take an interest in the genoa cover, and we capture their interest thanks to the demonstration in video showing the ease of use of our SNA Essential Genoa Sleeve.
Our advice for taking measurements:
Measurements should be taken with the sail rolled up on the foresail furling system.
For measurement A: Generally, the length of the jib luff is used for a precise definition of this measurement. To verify, you can check this length using one of the halyards near the genoa halyard point. You send a thin line with a halyard. Once it reaches the top, make a mark at the bottom, lower the line, and measure it on the ground. Repeat the measurement a second time to ensure the correct length.
For measurement C: The circumference at the clew point should be taken including the clew knot because the cover will enclose the entire area.
Product Details
- Polyester fabric
- Breathable waterproof technical fabric, highly resistant to abrasion
- Fitting
- To withstand the wind and rapid wear, the sleeve must be perfectly fitted to the foresail. The principle of threading through sewn plastic pulleys allows the sail to be tightly encased, thereby offering no grip to the wind.
